Category MI L22 How Light Emitting Diodes Affect the Activity Level of Drosophila Flies

Abstract Fruit Flies intrude the homes of millions of Americans each year. Imagine a

new, innovative way to get rid of those pesky insects once and for all.

Experimenting on how LED’s affect the activity level of fruit flies could be a

step towards this new invention. Using four different colors of LEDs,

(red, amber red, green and yellow), the fruit flies (kept in a plastic flask)

were tested with a different color each day for eight days. The flies were

tested in 24-hour cycles, and a CPO timer was used to keep track of the

count number. After averaging out both trials, the flies’ activity level was

greatest when tested with the green LED.
